How a day count is actually made

  1. Both dates are reduced to a plain calendar triple — year, month, day — and compared in UTC. Nothing here knows about clocks, so a daylight-saving change can never add or remove a day.
  2. The count is the number of midnights between the two dates. Monday to Friday of the same week is 4. This is the convention banks, couriers and contracts use unless they say otherwise.
  3. The inclusive figure is shown beside it: the same span counting both the first and the last day, which is what a 5-day medication course or a hotel-style day pass means. Neither number is more correct; they answer different questions.
  4. Weeks and days come from dividing by 7, because the week is the only calendar unit that never varies. Months are shown only as an approximate feel for scale (30.44 days), never as a deadline.
  5. Public-holiday dates are not calculated live. Ten of the eleven national holidays are re-derived from their statutory rule every time this page is built and compared with the published table; Matariki is transcribed from the Act's schedule, because it is lunar and no rule derives it.
days = floor( (UTC(end) - UTC(start)) / 86,400,000 )
inclusive = |days| + 1
weeks = floor(|days| / 7)   remainder = |days| mod 7

Counting days without the off-by-one

Almost every argument about a date comes down to one question nobody asked at the start: does the count include today?

The standard convention — the one banks, couriers and this calculator use — counts the midnights between two dates. Monday to Friday is four days. But plenty of real-world counts are inclusive: a 5-day course of antibiotics starting Monday finishes Friday, taking both ends. Neither is wrong; they are different questions, which is why the result above shows both numbers.

Calendar days vs working days

"Within 30 days" and "within 30 working days" differ by nearly two weeks. Working days are Monday to Friday excluding public holidays — and New Zealand has 11 national ones plus a regional anniversary day. A 20-working-day council consent clock started in mid-December will not run out until well into February once the summer holidays are stripped out.

When a contract or notice period matters, check which kind of day it counts, and remember that many legal deadlines exclude the day the clock starts. When the deadline is serious, confirm the counting rule with the body that set it.

Why we count weeks in sevens and months not at all

The week is the only calendar unit that never varies, which is why the result shows weeks-and-days: "6 weeks 3 days" transfers cleanly onto any calendar. Months vary from 28 to 31 days, so "about 2.1 months" is offered only as a feel for scale — never plan a deadline in months when the source counted days.

Holiday dates are not fixed forever. Mondayisation shifts the day off whenever a fixed-date holiday lands at a weekend, and Matariki is lunar, so it moves every year. Each table below states the year it applies to and how each date is set.

Planning around a stat day? Invoices due "on the 20th" still fall due when the 20th is a holiday — money just moves the next business day. If you employ people, Mondayised holidays apply to staff who would normally work the Monday, not the original date.

Regional anniversary days are deliberately not listed here: they differ by province, so a single national table cannot state them honestly.

Date questions, answered

How many days until Waitangi Day 2026?
Waitangi Day 2026 is observed on Friday, 6 February 2026. Note: falls on a Friday. It is a national public holiday in New Zealand, so most employees who would normally work that day are entitled to the day off on pay, or time-and-a-half plus a day in lieu if they work.
How are days between two dates counted?
The standard count is the number of midnights between them: Monday to Friday of the same week is 4 days. Some contexts — medication courses, hotel-style 'day passes', some legal deadlines — count inclusively, taking both the first and last day, which adds one. The calculator shows both so you can use whichever your situation calls for.
What does '30 days from today' actually mean?
Convention is that day zero is today and you land 30 midnights later — so 30 days from a Tuesday is a Thursday, four weeks and two days on. If a contract or notice period says 'within 30 days', check whether it counts calendar days or working days, because the difference is roughly ten days.
What are working days?
Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. New Zealand has 11 national public holidays plus one regional anniversary day, so a '20 working day' consent period is typically four to five calendar weeks depending on where the holidays fall.
What is Mondayisation?
When Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year's Day or the day after fall on a weekend, New Zealand law moves the observed public holiday to the following Monday (or Tuesday) for employees who would not otherwise work that weekend. The date itself doesn't move — the day off does.
Why is Matariki on a different date every year?
Matariki follows the Māori lunar calendar — the reappearance of the Matariki star cluster in the mid-winter morning sky — so the public holiday shifts each year. The dates are set in law decades ahead and always fall on a Friday: 10 July in 2026, 25 June in 2027.
How many days are in each month?
Thirty days have September, April, June and November; all the rest have 31, except February with 28, or 29 in a leap year. 2028 is the next leap year — 2026 and 2027 are both common years of 365 days.
Does the calculator handle leap years and time zones?
Yes. All calculations run on whole calendar dates in UTC, so daylight-saving changes never make a day appear or vanish, and the 29th of February is counted in leap years.
